Shooting

Grouse over English setters
(12th August – Mid September)

Strathmore has been famed as a dogging grouse moor since the days of black powder, and has been shot on a two gun per party, four day week since the 19th century.

We currently run two parties from 12th August until mid September shooting over English Setters. Around 10,000Ha (20,000 acres) in total area, the grouse moors of Braehour, Backlass and Strathmore are situated in what has been dubbed “The last great wilderness in Europe”. The lodge is centrally located, surrounded by the three moors.

Ducks & geese
(September -- December)

Ducks and geese can be flighted on several ponds and lochs a few minutes from the lodge and when combined with rough shooting or stalking can add variety and interest to sporting days from September through to December.

Awaiting an October morning flight of geese on the shore of loch more, hearing the geese cackling in pre-flight conversation a mile away across the loch, as stags roar and grouse give voice to their territorial declarations whilst the grey dawn gives way to a golden sunrise, must surely be one of the most timeless experiences available to modern man.

Rough shooting
(October onwards)

Rough Shooting provides the greatest variety and best value of our game shooting on offer. All game is wild and includes the possibility of the following species – Grey Lag and Pinkfoot Geese, Teal, Widgeon and Mallard Ducks, Snipe, Woodcock, Grouse, Pheasant and Partridge, Rabbits, Blue Hares and Brown Hares.

It should be noted that certain of the above quarry species are given “Protected” status in some of our more environmentally sensitive areas.

Guests are therefore required to heed the instructions of the gamekeeper as to what may be shot in any given area.
