Stalking

Red stags
(Mid September -- 20th October)

Mature Red Stags begin to arrive on the ground towards the end of September prior to the rut. The early days of our four week season provide challenging stalking with fresh arrivals of stags as yet un-distracted by the rut.

As the season progresses and the rut gets underway one can find oneself stalking “amongst the deer”. Stalking in the open vastness of Caithness can be particularly rewarding, often that which looks impossible will be achieved.

Hinds & roe does

In the course of hind stalking the opportunity to take a roe doe will sometimes arise. Occasionally it is possible not only to stalk both species in one day but in fact to take both species in a single stalk.

Due to the shortness of the winter day the best of the hind stalking is to be had in November, early December and February. Hinds are in season in Scotland from 21st October until 15 February.

The roe does continue until 31st March.

At Strathmore we welcome all stalkers from total novices to the most experienced.

Roe bucks

A small but increasing roe population permits us to offer roe stalking on an occasional basis i.e. a rest day during a week of grouse shooting, or for variety during a fishing week. In Scotland roe buck are in season from 1st April until 20th October.
